Celebrations of the Sephardic Jews of Curaçao in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth century

by JOSETTE CAPRILES GOLDISH

New year 2018 started with a very entertaining lecture given by Josette Goldish Capriles, our
library friend, historian/genealogist/investigator and writer of several books, amongst others the
popular “Once Jews – Stories of Caribbean Sephardim”.
Josette collected publications she found in the Mongui Maduro Library like invitations, programs
and reports about social acitivities and celebrations that existed in the second half of the
nineteenth and early twentieth century. In those days it was very common for jewish families to
party at all occasions.

These celebrations required considerable preparation like musical compositions, playwriting and
party planners who organized the entertainment, the food and the costumes.
Josette’s lecture was a great success and brought back joyful memories to some of the guests
whose parents and grandparents participated at these events.

An accompanying exhibition has been set up, which is to be visited from Monday through Friday
from 9.00 am -12.00 pm.
